"The Dearly Beloved" is the twenty-fourth and final episode in the second season of the Fox drama series The O.C.. The episode aired on the nineteenth of May in 2005.

Synopsis[]

Kirsten hits rock bottom after Caleb's funeral, prompting Sandy to stage an intervention. Meanwhile, Jimmy Cooper returns to Newport and renews ties with a mourning Julie, while Hailey Nichol returns to town for the funeral. Trey's girlfriend/partner-in-crime, Jess, bullies him into participating in a drug deal that turns into a shootout at the Bait Shop nightclub. Ryan learns the truth about what happened between Trey and Marissa, leading to a bloody confrontation.

Plot[]

Sandy is on the phone with a doctor at the rehab clinic, asking to meet right away. Seth runs into Kirsten and asks if she is doing okay. Seth apologizes to her about everything going on and she says how much his grandfather, Caleb, loved him. Seth goes looking for something in Sandy's office and finds the brochure to the rehab clinic. He looks through it and figures out it's for alcoholics. Seth goes to Ryan about it, thinking it is for Sandy until Ryan and Seth spot a depressed Kirsten. Ryan says that he doesn't think the rehab center is for Sandy.

At the rehab center, Sandy tells the doctor about Kirsten's history of alcohol use. Sandy tells the doctor about her car accident in The Showdown and how he is worried about how her father's death will make it worse. The doctor suggests a residential treatment for Kirsten and says how confidential and peaceful it will be for her. Sandy is worried that it will be difficult to get her to check herself in. Marissa checks out her bruise which is slowly healing just as Julie walks in. Marissa tries to help her mom find something to wear when the doorbell rings. Marissa answers it to find her dad, Jimmy Cooper. She hugs him just as Julie sees him. Jimmy says he is there for all of them through Caleb's death. Marissa and Julie are both grateful to see him.

At the Cohen's, Kirsten opens the door to find her sister, Hailey Nichol. Hailey feels responsible for Caleb's heart condition that ended up killing him but Kirsten assures her she was never the case. Kirsten reveals her last conversation she had with Caleb. Seth is reading in his room when Summer walks in. Summer brought Princess Sparkle for Captain Oats hinting that she is there for him while also meaning that Summer is there for Seth. Seth says he is more worried about his mom because of how he thinks she is going to rehab. Seth isn't sure as to how much Kirsten really has been drinking and feels guilty since he ran away, and knows that was hard on his mom. Summer thinks it is bigger than him and continues to comfort Seth.

Jess is waiting outside of Trey's apartment when he gets back. She asks to talk to him about business. Jess says that they can get around 15 grand for selling drugs and offers to give him half if he helps. Jess pulls out a gun and gives it to Trey. Caleb's funeral begins and is held at the same church he was married to Julie in. Kirsten greets Jimmy and walks arm-in-arm with Julie. The preacher begins the service, Sandy gives his condolences in his speech, and Hailey leads the prayer. Most of the cast members carry Caleb's casket.

At The Bait Shop, Jess visits Trey and tells him how the exchange is going to happen the same night at the Bait Shop. She says it has to be somewhere public due to her last exchange that went wrong. Trey assures her he will still go through with it but it's the last time. At the Cohen's, they are hosting a dinner and catering after the funeral. Hailey finds Jimmy and they catch up after she left him in The Way We Were. Jimmy assures there is no hard feelings and tells her about Hawaii. Jimmy sees Kirsten downing several glasses of alcohol to which Hailey says she has never seen her this way. Kirsten pours herself more to drink to which Sandy also sees and suggests she paces herself. Kirsten refuses, saying that her father just died and has every right to drink as much as she wants. Julie offers to take over watching Kirsten for Sandy and he expresses his concerns for her.

Seth finds Marissa and Ryan and they head to the pool house. More people show their sympathies to Kirsten and Summer fixes a plate of food for Kirsten. She tries giving it to Kirsten but she refuses and Sandy watches the exchange. She gives the plate over to Sandy who asks her to get Seth out of the house, hinting at Kirsten. Summer agrees and Sandy thanks her. Summer finds Seth, Ryan, and Marissa in the pool house and asks them if they want to head over to the Bait Shop. Marissa is concerned that Trey will be there and asks Ryan if he is there currently. Ryan tells Marissa that Trey is on day shifts and that she will be okay. They walk out together hand-in-hand.

The Core Four arrives at the Bait Shop and Trey sees them walk in. Marissa is mad when she sees Trey there and he awkwardly walks over to them. He apologizes to Seth and Ryan questions why he is there. Trey claims he is picking up a pay check and Marissa goes on to prove that he can't even do that until the next week. Summer notices her coldness toward Trey and Seth acknowledges that what Marissa said is true. Jess joins in and says some rude things to all of them and walks away with Trey in her hand. Ryan and Seth go get drinks while Marissa and Summer find some place to sit. Trey tells Jess he doesn't want to go through with it since Ryan is there. Trey pulls out the loaded gun.

Summer asks Marissa why she acted that way toward Trey and Marissa pretends to not understand. Ryan asks Seth how he is and he isn't doing very good. Ryan then sees some strange older men walk into the Bait Shop who meet up with Jess. Sandy and Jimmy catch up and he says how hard things have been since Jimmy left. Julie goes to Sandy asking for his help with Kirsten who has become so wasted, she is toppling around with a bottle of vodka in hand. Sandy approaches her and Kirsten screams at him to not touch her. Everyone hears and turns to look at her while Kirsten stumbles inside with Jimmy and Julie.

Jess does some of the drugs and asks the guys for the money. They test out the drugs Jess brought and they offer a re-negotiation for the money. Jess gets pissed and pulls the gun from Trey's pocket and points it at them. She asks for her money and they say she has to shoot them for it. Jess fires the gun toward the ceiling causing chaos amongst the guests. Everyone runs and Jess grabs the money, heading for the exit with Trey. Ryan sees them and then sees a guy point a gun at them. Ryan yells at everyone to get down as the shot is fired. Ryan keeps Marissa down while Seth keeps Summer down. Summer checks on Marissa who is bleeding from her head, but it was just broken glass that she fell down on. Summer attends to Marissa's head and Ryan is pissed.

The next day, Hailey is watching a movie and Sandy joins her. Sandy tells Hailey that Kirsten is sleeping it off and she questions how long it has been going on. Sandy says it has been going on for too long and that she needs to get help whether Kirsten likes it or not. Hailey asks how she can help and suggests she can take her to the spa for the day while Sandy tells the boys. Sandy thanks her. Ryan goes to Trey's and asks what happened. Trey says that he was helping Jess out and it got out of control. Trey says he is done and Ryan responds saying he has heard that from Trey plenty of times before. Trey and Ryan continue to argue until Ryan demands he leaves Newport. Trey tries to reason with him but Ryan doesn't want to hear it. Trey agrees to leave the next day. Ryan walks out without another word.

Jimmy brings Julie coffee and breakfast and asks her to go sailing and she agrees. Seth is fixing himself breakfast when Sandy walks in. Seth asks how Kirsten is and Sandy says that she has gone to the spa with Hailey. Seth voices his concerns for his mom and Sandy tells him that it is bigger than Caleb. Sandy then tells Seth that Kirsten has a drinking problem and needs help. Seth brings up the brochure and Sandy says he has been waiting for the right time to tell him. Sandy tells Seth that Kirsten can't stop and that she has to be sent away. He asks Seth to help with the intervention. At first, Seth gets defensive until Sandy says that it has been going on for a long time. Seth goes on to say that things have been weird between both Sandy and Kirsten which he noticed. Seth and Sandy continue to argue and Sandy says that Kirsten needs Seth. Ryan walks in just as Seth is storming out and updates him on Kirsten. Ryan offers to talk with Seth but Sandy says it is his job.

Marissa checks out the cut on her head just as Summer checks in on her. Summer asks her to go out and Marissa says she doesn't have to take care of her. Marissa thanks her but Summer asks what has been going on. Summer points out the bruise on her, the bad excuses, and her uneasiness toward Trey. Marissa begins to cry and Summer comforts her. Marissa tells Summer about her assault. Sandy goes to talk to Seth in his room. Sandy apologizes to Seth for not telling him sooner about Kirsten. Seth asks how long Kirsten will be gone and Sandy isn't sure. It might be for months at a time. Seth isn't sure he can help send his mom away and Sandy says he understands just as the doorbell rings. Sandy hugs Seth and leaves to get the doctor.

Hailey is driving Kirsten back from the spa and asks how she feels. Kirsten is in good spirits and says they should bring food home for the boys. Hailey says that they have a lot of leftovers and that they should just go home. Kirsten walks into the house looking for everyone. Sandy greets her and brings her into the kitchen to meet the doctor as Sandy, Ryan, and Hailey stand around. The doctor tells Kirsten about the intervention they are initiating. The doctor goes on to say that everyone wants to voice their concerns for her alcohol addiction and begins with Sandy. Sandy apologizes to her and says that he doesn't want her to hurt herself anymore. Kirsten says that he is overreacting. Hailey then talks to her about their mom's history and Kirsten gets more defensive. The doctor suggests Ryan go and Kirsten tells him not to intervene since she allowed him into their home. Ryan says she did because his own mom couldn't take care of him. Ryan goes on to say that he doesn't want it to happen again to someone else that he loves.

Kirsten tells the doctor she isn't going to go and just as she turns around to leave, Seth walks in. Seth begs Kirsten to go through with it which causes Kirsten to break down, crying. Everyone gathers around Kirsten and comforts her. Ryan and Seth watch T.V. while Kirsten packs her bags. She says goodbye to Hailey who tells her she was glad she could help Kirsten. Kirsten apologizes to both Ryan and Seth and Ryan says he just hopes she gets better and that him and Seth will watch over Sandy. Kirsten says she loves them both and hugs them in tears. Sandy drives Kirsten away as she waves goodbye to Seth and Ryan.

Julie and Jimmy get back from sailing and Julie feels guilty for being happy after Caleb's funeral. Jimmy says that their marriage wasn't what she had with Jimmy and Julie says that nothing will ever feel like it again. Jimmy asks to stay and give their relationship another shot, taking Julie's hand. Trey packs his stuff in a rush and Jess offers him a choice to go to Vegas with her. Trey agrees and Jess leaves to pack her stuff, saying she will be back later that night. Seth and Ryan float in the pool together to try and clear their minds but they don't find it helpful. Ryan says they should get out of the house but Seth says he isn't in the mood when the doorbell rings.

Seth answers it to find Summer wanting to talk to him. Summer asks to speak with him alone and makes sure Ryan can't overhear just yet. Seth assures Summer it's okay and Summer tells Seth about what happened when they were in Miami. Summer tells Seth that Trey attacked and assaulted Marissa. Seth pieces it together and Summer tells him that Marissa didn't tell Ryan because he would do something drastic. Seth says that Ryan has to know since he doesn't know who Trey would attack next.

Kirsten and Sandy arrive at Suriak and they show Kirsten to her room. She unpacks her stuff and her and Sandy take a look at her room. Another doctor enters the room, asking Kirsten to attend a welcome meeting and that she cannot make any calls for a couple of days due to the detoxing process. The doctor allows them some time alone to say goodbye and Kirsten apologizes to him about everything. Sandy kisses Kirsten goodbye and he leaves.

Ryan is in the pool house when Seth walks in suggesting they talk. Seth asks Ryan to sit down for what he is about to tell him and Ryan asks him to tell him what is going on. Seth then says that Sandy called, saying that Kirsten is in rehab now. Seth then says that he has something else to tell him and ask him not to turn into the old Ryan. Ryan asks him again what it is and Seth says how upsetting it will be. Seth tells Ryan he knows what really happened with Trey and Marissa. Seth tells Ryan that Trey attacked and assaulted Marissa and that she fought him off in The Return of the Nana. Ryan goes cold and dense as he hears Seth tell him the truth. Ryan is speechless until he says that he has tried over and over again with Trey and to be a better person but can no longer do that. Ryan storms out saying he is going to settle things with Trey.

Marissa walks into the dining room to find Jimmy and Julie preparing dinner. Marissa asks what is going on and Julie says that Jimmy will be staying with them while Jimmy moves back to Newport. Jimmy asks Marissa if she is okay with it and Marissa says she is willing to do anything to have her dad back and hugs Jimmy. She then hugs Julie and Marissa says that she would love for them to be a family again. Jimmy says that The Coopers are coming back just as Marissa gets a phone call. Marissa steps aside to take Seth's call who tells her that she could stop Ryan and that he knows. Marissa immediately hangs up, gets in her car, and heads to Trey's as Summer and Seth also make their way over.

Ryan is driving to Trey's and Trey is still cleaning up his place, getting ready to leave. Ryan gets out of the car and pounds on Trey's door. Trey opens the door and Ryan says that he knows what really happened with Marissa. Trey doesn't say anything as Ryan walks in, asking Trey how he could do that to her. Ryan says that Trey is destroying his life and saying he hurt Marissa. Trey pushes Ryan away and immediately reaches for his gun. He points it at Ryan and asks him to walk away. Ryan turns around and as Trey lowers the gun, Ryan tackles him. Ryan begins punching Trey and kicking him, just as Marissa pulls up.

Trey slams Ryan down into the glass table and keeps Ryan in a chokehold. Marissa storms in and yells at Trey to stop. Marissa yells at Trey to get off of him and starts hitting him. Trey pushes Marissa away and then grabs the telephone. Just as Trey does this, Marissa spots the gun, picks it up, and points it at Trey. Trey raises the telephone and is about to bang Ryan with it when Marissa fires the gun, shooting Trey in the back. Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap, plays in the background as Trey bleeds out, Marissa falls to the ground, and Trey looks back at her in shock. Trey collapses to the ground and Ryan crawls his way over to Marissa just as Seth and Summer walk in.
