Season 3[]

Jack Hess arrives in Newport with a Master's Degree in Education and six years of teaching at boarding schools on the East Coast, to be the new Dean of Discipline at Harbor High after the shooting involving Marissa, Ryan, and Trey.

He initially attempts to expel both Ryan and Marissa, but ultimately is only able to expel her since she was the one who fired the gun. Ryan attempts to get Marissa's expulsion reversed by setting up a meeting with Jack, but after Jack reminds Marissa of all the bad choices she'd made leading up to her shooting Trey and her self-admitting lack of remorse for it, the expulsion stands. He then confronts them at the Kickoff Carnival, demanding that Marissa leaves. When she refuses, he grabs her by the arm and pulls her away, leading to Ryan punching him in the face. Jack uses the incident to finally have Ryan expelled as well.

When he learns from Taylor that Seth and Summer allegedly invited Marissa to the carnival, he forces them to help as stage hands for Taylor's drama production of South Pacific.

He then gives Seth two months' detention after he and Summer steal a tiki hut prop from Taylor's play so Ryan and Marissa can have sex in the hut on the beach. He punishes Summer as well by having her lose the social chair to Taylor after tricking her into admitting that she helped Seth steal the theatrical set.

At the end of the Summer Dance, Summer catches Taylor and Jack sharing an intimate moment, resulting in Sandy using the information to blackmail Jack into leaving Harbor as well as to get Ryan back into school.
